Pi Day 2024

Faculty will serve up a slice of fun with a pie-eating contest in honour of the world-famous mathematical constant. No calculators required for this math class – just appetites for pies created by culinary arts students.

“The number Pi has an infinite number of digits in its decimal representation, which is kind of like how endless our love for pie is,” jokes Dr. Patrick Montgomery, Chair of Mathematics and Statistics at �þ���Ƶ. “While mathematicians are certainly keen to understand the importance of the number Pi, we’re more interested in how quickly students can devour a slice of pie on Pi Day.”

Pi Day, celebrated every year on March 14, corresponds with the first three digits of Pi (3.14). Pi is more than just an irrational number – it is the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter, and represented by the symbol for the 16th letter of the Greek alphabet. But who’s counting? We prefer to think of it as an excuse to eat pie!

“We’ve been planning this for weeks,” says Chef David Lang, Chair of Culinary Arts at �þ���Ƶ. “This contest is going to be flaky, buttery, and delicious—and the real winners will be those who get a chance to taste amazing pie made by culinary arts students!”
