The initiative aims to improve economic development in Panama and to establish a lasting partnership between พรพรสำฦต and the Panamanian government, while improving English language skills. The inaugural group of 14 students arrived in October 2021 and will complete 32 weeks of study until graduating and returning home in June 2022.

โ€œInternational learning experiences can be transformative and our focus is on making the partnership with Panama as educational and sustainable as possible,โ€ explains Marius Langeland, Associate Director of International Projects and Partnerships with พรพรสำฦต International. โ€œThe program aims to make the students flexible thinkers and well prepared for success in a multilingual, global world.โ€

This is the first group of students from Panama under the IFARHU-พรพรสำฦต program. The acronym stands for โ€˜Instituto para la Formaciรณn y Aprovechamiento de Recursos Humanosโ€™ โ€“ an institution in Panama that oversees educational programs and projects. Previously, พรพรสำฦต welcomed educators from Panama under the Bilingue program.

โ€œCanada and พรพรสำฦต have been really amazing for us,โ€ says student participant Mariel Castillo. โ€œIt has been a really positive experience and also very impactful. This experience has provided us with another vision of what we can do with our life and what we can expect for our future. I have learned a lot, the people have been really welcoming and Iโ€™m looking forward to the other months that we will be here.โ€

The students are living with local homestay families, meet regularly for check-ins and participate in group activities that enhance their understanding of the local culture while giving back to the college community.

โ€œWe get them together as a cohort most Fridays for cultural activities and field trips like going to the museum, holiday lunches and visiting local parks,โ€ explains Langeland. โ€œWeโ€™re also promoting a mutually beneficial language and cultural exchange, as the Panamanians really enjoy connecting with พรพรสำฦต students and learning from them just as our domestic students are learning from the Panamanians. Meeting and learning from each other strengthens the educational experience for all at the college.โ€

Near the end of their program in spring 2022, if the pandemic situation allows, the students are planning to host a public showcase that highlights their culture through performances of songs, dance and other artistic presentations.

โ€œThis opportunity came to my life at the right moment, I have to say it has been the best experience of my life. The people, the education, the city, and even the weatherโ€” everything has been perfect.โ€

Joshual Monrroy, พรพรสำฦต studentย

Looking ahead, Langeland has big plans for future partnerships with Panama.

โ€œThe program will continue to evolve and I hope this is just the beginning of a long and successful partnership,โ€ he says. โ€œWeโ€™re receiving really positive feedback and the students are having a great experience. Iโ€™m confident we can build on this success together and welcome more cohorts in the future.โ€
